A bathroom is judged years later, not on reveal day

Any new bathroom looks good the week it is finished. The real test comes several winters on, when the grout lines are still tight, the fan still clears the mirror and nothing behind the tile has gone soft. JDI Construction is a family-owned design-build remodeler from Vancouver, and we plan bathrooms with that later date in mind: a layout that suits the people using it, and the waterproofing, plumbing and ventilation that keep it sound. For homeowners in Woodland, on the Lewis River about 20 miles up I-5 from our office, that means a remodel designed for a damp valley climate as much as for looks.

One team carries your bathroom from the first sketch to the last bead of caulk. The details agreed in design, such as where the niche goes or how the floor slopes, do not get lost in translation because nobody is translating.

The parts that matter most

Small room, many trades. These four items account for most of the difference between a bathroom that ages well and one that does not:

  1. Gray-stained kitchen and bath remodel with granite slab detailing in Battle Ground, WA
LayoutClearances at the toilet, vanity and door make a modest room feel easy to move through, or a large one feel awkward.
  2. Three-bathroom remodel with white oak vanities in Battle Ground, WA
WaterproofingA continuous barrier beneath the tile is what protects the framing, and it has to be right before a single tile is set.
  3. Traditional kitchen and bath remodel with arched detailing in Vancouver, WA
VentilationA fan matched to the room's volume and ducted to the outdoors, never into the attic, so steam leaves the house.
  4. Mid-century-inspired kitchen and two-bath remodel in Vancouver, WA
LightingEven light at face height beside the mirror, plus general and shower lighting on separate controls.

A few decisions worth making early

Start with where the plumbing stays. A bathroom that keeps its drain locations is a simpler project than one where the toilet or shower moves across the room, because relocating drains means opening the floor. Sometimes the improved layout justifies that, and we will show you both versions so you can judge. Then think about who will use the room in ten years. A low or zero threshold shower, blocking in the walls for future grab bars and a comfortable vanity height cost little to include now and a great deal to add later. Finally, be honest about the tub. If the household still bathes children, or you expect to sell to a family, keep one somewhere in the house. If the only tub is a place to store shampoo bottles, a walk-in shower will serve you better.

What Woodland homes tend to need

Most Woodland houses are not old. The city's housing analysis counts about 70 percent of its homes as built after 1990, and bathrooms from that period share a pattern: a hall bath with a one-piece fiberglass tub and shower, and a primary bath with a large soaking tub, a cramped shower stall and a cultured-marble vanity top. Those rooms usually have enough square footage. The common request is to trade the oversized tub for a proper walk-in shower, replace the vanity with real storage and swap a noisy, undersized fan for one that actually dries the room. In the older homes of the original townsite, a single small bathroom often serves the whole house, and the supply and drain lines are worth renewing while the walls are open. One local detail matters for either kind of home. A substantial part of Woodland east of I-5 lies in the mapped Lewis River floodplain, and the city applies a floodplain review to mechanical permits and water heater replacements in those areas, while other neighborhoods are protected by the dike or sit outside the 100-year floodplain. If your remodel adds an exhaust fan duct or moves a water heater, we check which applies to your address before the plan is fixed.

What does a bathroom remodel cost in Woodland?

Two bathrooms of the same size can differ widely in cost, and the reasons are predictable. Moving drains, replacing a tub with a tiled shower, the amount and type of tile, a custom vanity against a stock one, glass, and extras like heated floors are the main levers. A hall bath refreshed in its existing layout sits low on that scale, and a primary bath rebuilt around a new shower sits high. We price the room you actually have. After a visit and a design, you receive an itemized plan that shows what each of those choices contributes, so you can adjust before anything is ordered.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

A bathroom is a matter of weeks on site, and the sequence cannot be rushed: demolition, rough plumbing and electrical, inspection, waterproofing, tile, then fixtures and glass. Several of those steps include cure time. Having every material selected and on hand before demolition is the single biggest thing that keeps the schedule intact, so we do not start until it is. If yours is the only bathroom in the house, tell us early and we will plan the order of work around that.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Bathroom Remodeling in Woodland

Is my bathroom a candidate for a remodel or just repairs?

We inspect the areas that matter, subfloor, plumbing, ventilation, and the shower or tub surround, and let the findings guide the recommendation. Sometimes a targeted repair and new fixtures do the job; other times, especially with older Woodland homes, hidden moisture damage makes a full remodel the smarter spend.

What surfaces work best given how wet it gets here?

In the damp Lewis River valley, we lean on porcelain and ceramic tile for floors and wet walls because they handle moisture without trouble. Paired with the right grout and sealing, they keep the bathroom durable and easy to maintain through wet season after wet season.

Can you reconfigure a poorly laid-out bathroom?

Yes. Older homes sometimes have awkward bathroom layouts, a tub crammed where a shower would serve better, or wasted corners. We can relocate fixtures and rework the plan, weighing the improvement against the plumbing changes involved, and show you what's worth doing.

Do you install accessible, low-barrier bathrooms?

We do. Curbless showers, grab bars, comfort-height toilets, and non-slip tile let homeowners stay in their Woodland homes comfortably as they age. We integrate these features so they look intentional and modern, not clinical.

How do you prevent moisture and mold problems afterward?

Ventilation is key in our climate. We size and install exhaust fans that vent fully outside, use moisture-resistant materials, and detail the waterproofing behind tile properly. Done right, that keeps the mold and mildew that plague older bathrooms from coming back.

What will a bathroom remodel cost?

It depends on size, fixtures, and whether we're moving plumbing. After seeing the space we provide a detailed estimate, and we usually suggest keeping a contingency for surprises common in older homes. We'll flag cost-saving swaps that don't hurt the result.

How long does the work take?

A typical bathroom remodel runs three to six weeks. We map out the phases before starting and keep you updated, since we know one bathroom down is a genuine hassle for a household.
