A few decisions worth making early

A few choices set the budget and the layout, and they're far easier to settle before demolition than to unwind mid-project. Tub versus walk-in shower is usually first: on the larger custom homes common out here, a primary bath often has both a soaking tub and a separate shower, and the real question is whether you use the tub enough to keep it or would rather give that footprint to a bigger walk-in shower. Then comes whether to go curbless — a zero-threshold shower needs extra framing and a properly sloped drain, but it opens up the room and stays easy to use for the long haul, which frequently makes sense in a home you intend to keep. Last is the plumbing: leaving fixtures where they are keeps costs down, while moving a drain or toilet means opening floors and walls and adds real expense. We put every trade-off on the table before the first wall comes down.
