A few decisions worth making early

A few choices set the direction of the whole project, and they're cheapest to settle before demolition rather than during it. Keeping the tub or converting to a walk-in shower is usually first — many Tualatin homes have a tub nobody's used in years, and its footprint often makes a far better shower, though it's worth keeping a tub in the house if you have young kids or plan to sell before long. Whether a curbless, zero-threshold shower is worth it comes next: it looks clean, drains well when it's built right, and stays easy to use as you age in place, but the floor has to be framed for it from the start. And whether to move plumbing carries the clearest cost — leaving fixtures where they are is the economical route, while relocating a toilet or drain means opening the floor and walls.
