The second is the island, which only earns its footprint when you can keep 36 to 42 inches of clear walkway on every side you'll actually use. The third is whether to keep the current layout or move the sink, range, or refrigerator, since relocating plumbing, gas, or venting is where costs tend to hide. And because cabinets are the longest lead item, we settle their style early — decide late and every trade behind them slips, no matter how smoothly the rest of the plan runs.
