A few decisions worth making early

The choices that move a kitchen's budget and schedule the most deserve to be settled before demolition. One is whether to open a wall to the dining or living space — it can transform how a home lives, but it comes down to whether the wall is load-bearing, which we verify before it goes into the plan. Another is the island, which only works if the room can give it 36 to 42 inches of clear walkway on every side you'll use. A third is whether to keep the layout or move the sink, range, or refrigerator, since relocating plumbing, gas, or the vent run is where cost quietly climbs. And we lock cabinet style early by design — cabinets are the longest lead item, and their delivery date drives the whole schedule, so a late choice there pushes everything downstream.

Plan on several weeks of on-site work for most kitchens, but the timeline really begins before demolition: cabinets are the longest lead item, and their delivery date sets the pace, so we order them as soon as the design is locked. Opening a wall, relocating plumbing, or upgrading an electrical panel adds time, and even newer homes occasionally hold a surprise once the walls are open. We hand you a realistic schedule up front, pull the permits the work requires, and stage the trades so you're without a working kitchen for as little time as possible.
