A handful of decisions steer both the budget and the layout, and they're far easier to settle before demolition than during it. Start with the tub: is it earning its footprint, or would a walk-in shower serve you better? When the tub goes unused, converting it usually buys back space and makes the room more comfortable to live in. Next, think about whether a curbless, zero-threshold shower is worth the added framing and drainage detailing — for households planning to stay put, it often is, and it's far cheaper to build in now than to add later. Finally, plumbing: keeping fixtures where they sit is the economical route, while relocating a toilet or shower drain means opening floors and walls and raises the cost. Some layouts justify it and some don't. We walk through each of these openly so the trade-offs are clear before the first wall comes down.
