A few decisions worth making early

The decisions that move a kitchen's budget and schedule the most are worth settling before demolition, not during it. Chief among them is whether to open a wall between the kitchen and an adjoining room — a frequent request in Oregon City's older homes, and one that hinges on whether the wall carries load, which changes the framing and the cost. Then there's the island question: it works only when the clearances do, with 36 to 42 inches of walkway on every side you actually use. Cabinets are the longest lead item, so we finalize the design and order them first, then build everything else around their arrival.
