Shower remodeling in Forest Grove, from the studs out
Tile is a finish. It sheds most of the water, but some always gets through the grout, and what happens next depends on the layers underneath: a continuous membrane, a pan that slopes, and a drain connection that is sealed properly. JDI Construction, a family-owned design-build remodeler based in Vancouver, WA, builds showers in that order, structure and waterproofing first, tile and glass after. For a Forest Grove home, where winters are long and damp and bathrooms dry slowly, that order is what separates a shower that lasts from one that needs redoing.
The same team designs and builds your shower. The niche height, bench location and glass layout are drawn by people who know how the waterproofing has to wrap each of those features, so nothing is added later in a way that punctures the membrane.
Where a shower succeeds or fails
Once the tile is up you cannot see any of this, which is the reason to get it right while you can:
- 1

Slope to drainA floor pitched toward the drain everywhere, including the bench top and the niche sill, so nothing puddles.
- 2

Tile & groutChosen for traction underfoot and easy cleaning, set over a waterproofed substrate that does the protecting.
- 3

Sealing the seamsInside corners, the curb, niche edges and the drain collar get extra attention, since leaks begin at transitions.
- 4

AccessibilitySolid backing in the walls for future grab bars, a seat, and a low or flush entry if you plan to stay in the home.
Choices to lock in while the walls are open
A few things have to be decided before framing is closed up. Is this a tub coming out, or an existing stall being rebuilt? Removing a tub frees up a generous footprint, and we will usually ask whether another tub remains in the house before you commit. Do you want a curb or a flush entry? Flush is easier to walk into and looks clean, but the floor framing has to be lowered or the room floor built up, and the slope has to be exact. Then the built-ins: a bench, niches, a handheld on a slide bar, blocking for grab bars. All of them are simple to frame now and difficult to add over finished tile. Glass and drain style come early as well, since a linear drain and a center drain call for different pan shapes.
What Forest Grove showers tend to need
Forest Grove's older neighborhoods have plenty of bathrooms where the shower was an afterthought. In the Painter's Woods district south of downtown, which the city dates to 1880 through 1948, and in the Clark and Walker-Naylor districts, a typical setup is a tub in an alcove with a shower head added above it and tile applied over whatever wall was there. When those surrounds fail, they fail at the corners and around the valve, and water travels into the framing. Covering the old surface with a new one hides the problem without fixing it. We take the alcove back to the studs, repair any damaged framing or subfloor, and rebuild with a proper pan and membrane. Old valves and galvanized supply lines get replaced while we have access.
In the many Forest Grove homes built in the decades of growth since the 1950s, the usual starting point is a molded fiberglass unit or a small acrylic pan with a framed door. These are generally dry behind the walls, so the job is an upgrade: a tiled walk-in, a wider opening, clear glass, a niche where you can reach it. In either kind of house we pair the shower with a correctly ducted exhaust fan, because western Oregon humidity will not clear the room for you.

What does a shower remodel cost in Forest Grove?
A Forest Grove shower is priced by how it is built. Swapping one prefabricated unit for another is the low end. A fully tiled walk-in with a flush entry, frameless glass and a linear drain is the high end. Between those, the variables are size, tile selection, whether the drain relocates, the glass, and how much repair the framing needs once the old surround is off. Older homes are more likely to need that repair. We give you an itemized estimate after seeing the bathroom, so the figure describes your shower and nothing generic.
How long does a shower remodel take?
A shower-only project is shorter than a full bathroom, though it is not quick. Membranes, mortar and grout each need time to cure before the next step, and skipping that wait is how showers fail early. Moving a drain, building a flush entry, or repairing rot adds days. Plumbing permits for Forest Grove addresses go through the city's Building Division, and any electrical work, such as a new fan circuit, is permitted through Washington County. We take care of both and tell you before we start how long your only shower will be out of use, if it is your only one.
