A few decisions worth making early

The decisions that shape a shower's cost and layout are best made before demolition begins. The biggest is usually whether to convert an unused tub into a walk-in shower — worth doing when the tub only collects dust, though we generally advise keeping at least one tub in the house so a future buyer isn't put off. Next is curbed versus curbless: a zero-threshold shower is cleaner to look at and barrier-free to step into, but it needs recessed framing and an exact slope, which is why it belongs in the plan rather than the field. Extras like a bench, recessed niches, a second showerhead, or grab-bar blocking for aging in place have to be framed in early, and we settle the glass and drain up front because both dictate how the pan and walls are built.
