The choices that shape a shower's cost and layout are easiest to settle before demolition, not after. The first is often whether to convert a little-used tub into a walk-in shower — a common request, though we usually suggest leaving at least one tub somewhere in the house so resale isn't a question later. Then comes curbed versus curbless: a zero-threshold shower looks seamless and is genuinely barrier-free, but it depends on recessed framing and a precise slope, so it has to be planned rather than improvised. The extras — a bench, recessed niches, a second showerhead, or grab-bar blocking for aging in place — all have to be framed in from the start, and we lock in the glass and drain style early because both change how the pan and walls get built.
