Why a curbless shower is harder than it looks

A curbless walk-in shower looks simple, but it is one of the more technical things we build; the waterproofing and the slope have to be exact. A few decisions worth making early

The decisions that shape a shower's cost and layout are best settled before demolition. One that comes up often in Happy Valley's larger homes is whether to convert a rarely-used tub into a bigger walk-in shower — worth doing when the tub sits empty, though we'd keep at least one tub in the house so resale never becomes a conversation. Then there's curbed versus curbless: the zero-threshold look is clean and barrier-free, but it lives or dies on recessed framing and an exact slope, so it belongs in the design from day one. Extras — a bench, recessed niches, a second showerhead, or grab-bar blocking for aging in place — all have to be framed in early, and we lock in the glass and drain up front because both determine how the pan and walls get built.

Because so much of Happy Valley was built recently, the shower we're most often replacing isn't broken — it's builder-grade. A shallow molded pan, a plastic surround, and a low-end door do the job but never feel like the rest of a nice hillside home. There the work is an upgrade: a fully tiled walk-in, frameless glass, real storage niches, and the slope and drain details that make a large shower feel custom rather than catalog.

On the bigger primary suites, homeowners tend to want the curbless, glassed-in look and sometimes a wet-room feel with a freestanding tub nearby — both of which put even more weight on the waterproofing and the slope. That's where the framing-out approach pays off. And in this wet climate, we treat the membrane and the ventilation as the two things we never cut corners on, so a large, open shower dries out fully and the finishes last.

What does a shower remodel cost in Happy Valley?
