A few decisions worth making early

The choices that shape a shower's cost and layout are cheapest to settle before demolition, while they're still lines on a drawing. Converting a tub to a walk-in shower comes up often — a sensible change when the tub rarely gets used, though we usually recommend keeping at least one tub in the house so you don't work against resale. Then there's the question of curbed versus curbless: a zero-threshold entry is cleaner and steps out of the way as you get older, but it depends on recessed framing and a slope cut to an exact pitch, so it shapes the whole floor. Anything set into the walls — a bench, recessed niches, a second showerhead, or blocking so a grab bar can go in cleanly later — needs to be framed and waterproofed in from the start, never surface-mounted after the fact. We also lock in the glass and the drain early, because both change how the pan and walls are built.
