The extras that have to be built into the framing — a bench, recessed niches, a second showerhead or a rain head, grab-bar blocking for aging in place — can't be added convincingly after the tile is set. We also settle the glass and drain early, because with large-format tile and stone the drain choice and slope have to be planned around the layout, not the other way around.
