A shower that stays dry behind the tile
Most failed showers look fine on the day they are finished. The trouble starts later, behind the tile, where water finds an unsealed corner or a pan that never sloped to the drain. JDI Construction, a family-owned design-build remodeler based in Vancouver, WA, builds showers in the opposite order from how people shop for them: pan, slope and membrane first, tile and glass after. For homeowners in Yacolt, up in the foothills at the north end of Clark County where the damp season is long, that order matters.
The same team designs the shower and builds it, so nobody is handed a drawing they had no part in. Here is what we pay attention to, what we expect to find in homes around Yacolt, and how cost and schedule work.
The details that decide how it holds up
Almost everything that keeps a shower sound is invisible by the time you step into it. Four things we won't compromise on:
- 1

Slope to drainThe pan and every ledge, niche sill and bench top tilted so water runs off instead of sitting.
- 2

Tile & groutThe finish you chose, set over a waterproof layer that would keep the wall dry even without it.
- 3

Sealing the seamsInside corners, the curb, niche edges and the drain connection treated as the weak points they are.
- 4

AccessibilitySolid backing for grab bars, a seat, and a low or flush entry planned in while the walls are open.
A few decisions worth making early
Decide the entry first. A curb is simpler to build. A flush, curbless entry is easier to use for as long as you live in the house, but the floor framing has to be lowered or reworked to make the slope, so it can't be added as an afterthought. Decide next whether a tub is coming out to make room. That is a good trade when the tub sits unused, as long as another one remains elsewhere in the home. Then list the built-ins: a bench, niches, a handheld sprayer, a second head. Each one needs framing or plumbing in the wall. Glass style and drain type sound like finishing touches, but they come early in the build, since both change how the pan is formed.
What Yacolt showers tend to need
Much of in-town Yacolt was built in the 1990s and 2000s, as the town's population more than doubled, and showers from those decades are commonly one-piece fiberglass or acrylic units, or a tub with a thin surround. They rarely fail dramatically. They crack, discolor and feel small. Replacing one with a tiled walk-in means building real waterproofing where the factory unit used to do that job on its own, and it's the moment to add the blocking, the niche and the better valve the original never had.
On the acreage outside town the houses often run older, and so do the showers: tile set over materials that were never meant to stay wet, or a pan that has been recaulked many times. There we assume the wall cavity needs inspecting and allow for framing repairs if moisture has reached it. Two rural details matter as well. Homes here are on septic, the town included, since Yacolt has no public sewer, and many acreage properties draw from a private well. A shower replacement doesn't alter either system, but well pressure and water treatment influence which valve and how many outlets make sense, so we ask before specifying a multi-head setup.

What does a shower remodel cost in Yacolt?
The range is wide because the word shower covers very different builds. Replacing one manufactured unit with another is the modest end. A tiled, curbless shower with heavy glass and a linear drain is the other. Between them, the price moves with size, tile choice, whether the drain relocates, the glass, and how much repair the walls need once opened. Curbless entries add labor in the floor framing. We look at the space in person, then give you an itemized plan so every upgrade has its own line.
How long does a shower remodel take?
A shower is a shorter job than a whole bathroom, but it has waiting built in. Pans, membranes, mortar and grout each need to set before the next step, and glass is typically measured after the tile is finished and then fabricated. Relocating a drain or repairing damaged framing extends things. We give you a realistic schedule up front, handle any permit the work needs through Clark County, which covers both the town and the unincorporated area, and arrange the work so your household isn't without a place to shower longer than it has to be.
