A few decisions worth making early

First is whether to take out a wall between the kitchen and the dining or living space — the answer hinges on whether it's load-bearing, which changes the framing and the cost. Next is whether you have the room for an island, and that comes down to clearances: you want 36 to 42 inches of walkway on every side you actually use, or the island fights you instead of helping. Then there's the big one — keep the current layout, or move the sink, range, or refrigerator. Relocating plumbing, gas lines, or venting adds real cost, so it's worth deciding on purpose rather than by accident. And we lock the cabinet style early, because cabinets carry the longest lead time and their delivery date sets the whole schedule; decide late and everything downstream slides with it.
