A few decisions worth making early

The choices that swing a kitchen's budget and schedule the most are the ones best settled before anyone swings a hammer. Whether to open a wall into the dining or living room is often the first — a great way to bring in light and connect the space, but it hinges on whether that wall is load-bearing, which changes the framing and the cost. If an island is on the list, the real question is clearance: you want 36 to 42 inches of walkway on every side you actually use, or it works against you. Then there's the layout itself — keeping the sink, range, and refrigerator where they are is far cheaper than relocating them, because moving any of the three drags plumbing, gas, or venting along with it. And cabinet style gets locked early, because cabinets are the longest lead item and their delivery date sets the entire schedule.
